More About NSBE

The National Society of Black Engineers is a non-profit organization founded in 1975 with over 16,000 active members in their 500 chapters all over the world. The NSBE Torch symbolizes the organization’s everlasting, burning desire to achieve success in this competitive society and to effect positive change in the quality of life of all people. Furthermore, the organization also upholds Excellence, Exposure, Community, Empathy and Leadership as its core values.

Their mission is to “to increase the number of culturally responsible Black Engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community.” This is done by offering its members leadership training, professional development activities, mentoring, career placement services, community service opportunities and more.

Our Goals

Currently, NSBE strives to accomplish the following objectives:

  • Stimulate and develop student interest in the various engineering disciplines
  • Strive to increase the number of minority students studying engineering at both the undergraduate and graduate levels
  • Encourage members to seek advanced degrees in engineering or related fields and to obtain professional engineering registrations
  • Promote public awareness of engineering and the opportunities for Blacks and other minorities in that profession
  • Function as a representative body on issues and developments that affect the careers of Black Engineers

As a new chapter, we intend on accomplishing these objectives for black engineers at Queen’s University. These objectives will be achieved through our three pillars: Professional Development, Mentor-ship and Connections, and Academic Support:

Our Pillars

Professional Development

In professional development, black engineers will be given guidance and knowledge in navigating through the professional engineering workplace as a person of colour. We will host events where Queens Alumni will discuss their experience in the workplace as a black engineer and give advice based on that experience. In addition to this, we aim to highlight resources within engineering companies that aid minorities including black engineers.

Mentor-ship and Connections

Mentor-ship and Connections aims to foster a community of black engineers at Queen’s University and connect current student with upper year engineering students. We will be hosting events and workshops where black engineers can socialize and host a connection hub where upper year students can serve as mentors for first year students.

Academic Support

We aim to help black engineers excel academically by providing resources that are better tailored to black engineers. This includes helping black international students deal with the culture shock of the different education system and providing black engineers with a comfortable study environment around like-minded people.
