Our Mission
Black students make up a small percentage of the community at Queen’s University, and an even smaller percentage within the Engineering Faculty. As a result, it can be difficult to find people that you strongly relate to and connect with, as well as finding resources better tailored to the black population. While QBAS does address some of these issues, we felt it was important to specifically address the intersectionality with being black and being an engineer at Queen’s University. Therefore, we have decided to create a new chapter of NSBE. We aim to provide black engineers at Queen’s University with more specific resources and academic support, guidance in professional development as a black individual and to foster a community of black engineers.
NSBE is the National Society of Black Engineers and is a society dedicated to giving black engineers support, mentorship and professional development. As a newly found chapter of NSBE, we aim not only provide to what was previously mentioned but generate a sense of belonging and community for black engineers at Queen’s University.
We plan to achieve these goals by hosting events and workshops for black engineers and provide resources and support that are more specific to black engineers, in addition to the standard support available for all engineers.
Mission Summary
Foster a community of black engineers in Queen’s University. Provide mentor-ship opportunities to incoming first year students.
